フライフィッシャーマンであり、バンブーロッドビルダーの井手高太郎さん。宮大工の祖父と工業デザイナーの父の影響で幼いころからものづくりやデザインに興味をもち、現在は「六角竹竿高太郎」を設立して、地元福岡でフライフィッシング用の竹竿をハンドメイドする、日本では数少ない竹竿職人である。「竹は不安定な素材。塗装して竹が安定するまでは気が抜けません。注文を受けるときはベースとなる４種類のラインナップのなかから好きなものを選んでもらい、できるだけ会って話をして、一緒に釣りをして、その人の癖を見る。その癖に合わせて硬さや柔らかさを調整するんです」

The main street of Yaizu is almost empty. Apart from a few old ladies flirting between shops, there are no physical traces of the street’s former life. Everything is packed away inside Enshuya, which is understandable- it’s winter. Through the sliding doors, vintage sewing machines rest on wooden tables, half hidden by the glass cabinets packed with cotton shirts. Kiyo Naito appears from a back room and darts over to greet us, sitting herself behind one of the metal sewing machines. She is now 86 years old, only four years younger than her shop, Enshuya.
