穏やかな器 JAPANESE MORTAR & PESTLE

ぽってりとしたおおらかなたたずまいがなんとも魅力的なこの器たち。山口県防府市にある堀越窯のすり鉢である。以前中国地方にモノ探しの旅に行ったとき、山口出身の友人に教えてもらった。「山口県産のいいモノあったら教えて」という質問に、友人は実家で10年以上使っているすり鉢があるということで持ってきてくれた。ひと目で気に入り、すぐに窯元を訪ねてみることにした。
防府は山口県東部に位置する瀬戸内海に面した、とても穏やかなところだ。海辺に近い小高い丘の中腹にある窯元を訪ねると、これまたひと目で穏やかだとわかる御主人の安沢秀浩さんが笑顔で迎えてくれた。堀越窯の創業は明治15（1882）年。もう120年近くになるというから驚いた。すり鉢をはじめさまざまな陶器を安沢さんがひとりでつくり、それを奥さまがお手伝いしている。穏やかな環境で穏やかなご夫婦がつくる、穏やかなすり鉢。手でつくったモノにはやっぱりつくり手がよく出ているものである。
　
The pudgy Mortar & Pestle known in Japan as “tsuribachi” bowls sat cutely on the shelf of the Horikoshi-gama in the small city of Bofu, Yamaguchi prefecture. On my last trip to the Chugoku area my friend had taught me about these wonderful tsuribachi bowls that he and his family had used for the past ten years. Bofu city is located on the East side of Yamaguchi on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, it’s an extremely beautiful place. The Horikoshi-gama is located on a hill overlooking the sea. Upon arrival I was happily greeted by the owner, Hidehiro Yasuzawa. I learned to my surprise that the Horikoshi-gama was founded in 1882-120 years ago! Today, Yasuzawa with the support of his wife takes great joy in making each tsuribachi by hand in their beautiful factory overlooking the sea.
