いまより「いま」なアルゼンチンアート｜Editor’s Note #43

いまより少し未来の「いま」へようこそ！ アルゼンチンやブエノスアイレスのアートシーンに興味のある読者のみなさん、みなさんはいまよりも「いま」なライフスタイルを探っている方たちかもしれない。
アルゼンチンはいま、世界を静かに新しい方向へと導いている。財政難やいくつもの失敗を経験したこの国の人々は、国家に頼らず、仲間がつながり合う小さなネットワークのなかに、希望や「健康的な未来」があると考えている。
そもそもアルゼンチンを特集することになったのは、ふたりのすばらしいアーティストに出会ったことがきっかけだった。彼らは日常をさまざまな方法で表現する。家のなかや近所で起こっていること — 自宅でチーズを食べたという些細なできごとなどを含め、ドローイングやコラージュ、テキストを用いた日記という形で作品化する。彼らが求めるものは、いかに「ノーマル」であるかということだ。今回、取材した他のアーティストたちもまた、ニューヨークやロンドン、東京などのアートシーンのトレンドとはかけ離れた作品を制作している。いわゆるアートシティでは、いかにメディアに取り上げられ、コレクターに訴えられるかに焦点が当てられ、時代の気分にあった作品が蔓延する。しかしアルゼンチンにはこうしたアートシーンがない。バイヤーもいなければ、アートやクリエイティブに関わる職も乏しい。しかし、こうした状況のなかでアルゼンチンのアーティストたちは、本来アーティストが追求すべきこと、つまり、美しく創造性の高い作品を生み出すことに没頭できるようになった。
アルゼンチンのアーティストたちは、彼らが「ワークショップ」と呼ぶ、小さなスタジオやギャラリーを構え、そこにアートに関心のある人々が集い、語りあい、小さな展覧会を開催し、自らアートシーンを築いている。アーティスト同士が協力しあいながら、たがいに切磋琢磨し、より新鮮で刺激的なクリエイティブを目指す、健全なアートシーンがここにはある。そんな環境のなかで、アルゼンチンのアーティストたちは、静かに、そして謙虚に、まっすぐな道を突き進む。そしていまよりも「いま」な世界を無意識のうちに表現しているのだ。
　
Argentina Art: ‘Nower’ then Now
Welcome to the future. The fact that you’re interested in Argentina as a country and art in Buenos Aires as a topic – means one thing – you are a purveyor of the future – and are interested in finding a lifestyle that is more ‘now’ then now.
Argentina is quietly leading the world on a new course– but this is happening completely by circumstance. There is no master plan– but rather thanks to many failed plans the citizens have come to understand that the only hope or true belief in a ‘healthy future’ can be found in small networks of friends and associates.
We originally wanted to do an Argentina Art issue–because two of our best friends, both featured in this issue, live there – and both are amazing artists. They draw and document the daily: their house, the plants in their neighborhood, and even the cheeses they eat. They seek the ‘normal’ – and work hard to maintain a clear prospective on reality. They and the other Argentinian artists we interviewed for our feature story are far removed from the trendy art scenes of New York, Tokyo and London. In these so called art cities art has become more a game of reading the rich, enticing the media, and being a blend of stereotypical and original. But, in Argentina, thanks to a lack of buyers, scarcity of jobs, and the diminishing state of art education the artist has reclaimed the true meaning of what it is to be an artist in the first place: To realize beauty and to be creative.
Argentinian artists have created ‘workshops’–small spaces & galleries in which the young and old of similar mindsets gather to talk about their art, to create art and to produce zines and art shows. The Argentinian artist has realized that to support each other, refine their artistic skill, and to stay creative is by far the hardest path to take–but judging from their fresh and inspirational work as well as the smiles on their faces and passion for their fellow artists – it appears Argentinian artist are in their own quiet and humble way leading a straight-path to a future that’s more ‘now’ then now.
