今回、僕たちは創造性あふれるノルウェーのクリエイターたちにオスロを案内してもらった。案内人は編集者、デザイナー、アーティスト、建築家、料理家など、世界でいまもっとも注目を集めている才能豊かな人々だ。また、ノルウェーを代表するふたりのクリエイターにもインタビューすることができた。ひとりは、『Oslo, August 31st』をリリースした映画監督、ヨアヒム・トリアー。もうひとりは今年の2月に日本の原子力発電所をテーマにしたアルバム『N-Plants』を完成させた、音楽家のゲイル・イエンセンだ。

だが、ノルウェーのもっともすばらしい点はなんといっても、自然がすぐ側にあることだろう。都会から15分もしない場所に、自然のなかで遊べるさまざまなフィールドが広がっている。誌面では、ノルウェーのアウトドアブランド、ヘリーハンセンの協力を得て、海も山も楽しめるウォーキングコースも紹介している。さあ、ジャケットのジッパーを上げて、地球上でもっともバランスのとれた都市オスロへ、冒険の旅に出かけよう。

2) Norway will also take care of you when you get old-. They are ranked #1 or close to the top in virtually all studies on elderly care.
3) Norway is equal in its treatment of women- being a gender equality pioneer for the entire planet. In Norway roughly 50% of politicians, civic leaders and top business are led by women.

We thought the best way to get an inside look into the city of ‘Now’ was to take a walk with several, creative Norwegians and have them show us their capital city, Oslo. In short, this issue is a Norwegians’ insider guide to Norway-directed by some of Norway’s top creative talent in the fields of editing, design, music, art, architecture as well as handcraft and food.

Besides our insiders guide, we were also fortunate enough to catch up with two of Norway’s amazing creators: Joachim Trier, the Norwegian director of the recently released movie “Oslo, August 31st”- a movie about a single day in Oslo. We also had good enough fortune to be acquainted with Geir Johnson, the eclectic musician-composer behind the sound of Biosphere. The new Biosphere album “N-Plants,” which was completed in early February of this year, takes a pre 3/11 look at Japanese nuclear power plants.

With everywhere Papersky has taken readers, what truly makes Norway special is its close proximity to nature. In just fifteen minutes one can be hiking, mountain biking, sailing or skiing. The Papersky crew, in collaboration with Norwegian outdoor brand HELLY HANSEN, created a special “Mountain to Sea” walk especially for this OSLO issue of Papersky. So get ready to zip up and prepare to explore Oslo the most balanced city on the planet.

現在、日本は、エネルギーの80% 、食料の65%を輸入に頼っている。しかし250年ほど昔の江戸時代には、すべてのエネルギーを自給していた。江戸文化研究家の石川英輔氏によると、「江戸は農業都市であっただけでなく、植物をうまく活用した社会であった」という。東海道沿いに植えられた松には、街道を歩く旅人に木陰を提供する役割もあった。江戸から京都までは歩いて13〜17日間ほどの旅路だが、街道沿いにはいまでも江戸の風情を感じる場所がいくつも残っている。箱根の石畳の道や三重県の関宿（約1.8km にわたって江戸時代の街並みが残る）、そして愛知県の赤坂宿には、江戸から続く旅籠もある。

こうした場所を訪れると不思議なことに、過去という時空が現在と同時に動いているように思えてならなかった。実際に歩いてみると、朝から晩まで１日かけて歩く距離は、新幹線でたった10分の距離。同じ距離の移動でも、目的地を目指して一瞬にして走り過ぎてしまう新幹線とは異なり、歩く旅ではその過程でさまざまなことが起こる。旅の途中で出会う人、音、食べ物、そして冒険…。それはまさに人生そのものであり、かつてにぎわった旧街道を歩くと、過去、現在、未来が同時に動きだし、いまという瞬間が過去や未来もかたちづくっているのではないかと思うようになった。つまり僕らは時空を超えて永遠に生きているのだ。東海道を歩く旅。この旅は、旅という概念を変える大切なことを僕に教えてくれた気がする。

The Road to all Times

The Edo Period’s greatest road, The Kyu-Tokaido Road, is a 490 kilometer journey. The road was built over 400 years ago- and was at the time the world’s cleanest, safest and most traveled road. The Tokaido road is also one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s greatest contributions to Japanese commerce and culture.The road linked Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto via a series of 53 stops. Fortunately, there are still many parts of this historic road intact and for this issue we offer our readers a chance to travel back in time- and in the process, perhaps catch a glimpse of the future. Traveling back is not merely going backwards- but rather looking back and re-Iearning so that we can travel forwards in a balanced and stable way. On the Tokaido Road, Edo Japan most certainly reveals hints of the future.

Today, Japan is dependent on approximately 80% of its energy and 65% percent of its food. But for approximately 250 years during the Edo Period, Japan was self-sufficient in all resources-including its energy needs. The key according to author and Edo scholar Eisuke Ishikawa was that Edo was not only an “agricultural country” but also a “plant based country.” Edo’s efficient use of plants can be found all along the Tokaido route via the many Japanese Pine Trees which were used for shade to keep travelers cool on hot days. The entire Tokaido route can be walked in 13 -17 days and many of the mountain passes still consist of the original stones from 400 years ago. As one walks though the mountains of Hakone or the Mie village of Seki (where about 1.8 kilometers of original merchant houses are still intact), or stays at the last running ryokan on the route from the Edo era in Akasaka, there is definitely a sensation of connecting the past to the present. Interestingly, I calculated that 1 full day of walking is approximately 10 minutes of time on the Shinkansen. While the train is merely a blur and literally a means to an end, a single day of walking along the Tokaido is a lifetime: the people, sounds, tastes and adventures form a memory compiled of the past, present and future which lives on forever.

いまの日本に必要なのは、「シンプリシティ」ではないだろうか。思想の根幹を変え、新たな時代の思想へとシフトする際に、バスクで感じたこの言葉が新しい時代をつくる鍵になると僕は思った。つまり、昔の日本人がそうしていたように、自然や文化に誇りをもち、他人への敬意を払いながら、無駄のない慎ましやかなライフスタイルへと転換させるのだ。

バスクにはこの土地特有の文化があり、若い世代でさえも自国の文化や歴史に誇りをもち、謙虚に生きている。僕たちはこの旅で、世界のトップアスリートと彼らが在籍するチームの取材をした。アスリートのひとりは、アスレティック・ビルバオのフェルナンド・ジョレンテ。もうひとりは、エウスカルテル・エウスカディのサムエル・サンチェスだ。僕たちが驚いたのは、この小さな土地から世界的なアスリートを輩出していることである。彼らの在籍するチームもまた、世界に名だたるチームでありながら、選手は全員バスク人というのも驚きだ。おそらくその強さの秘訣は、バスクの人々の誇りとシンプルで無駄のない精神にあるのだろう。

バスクでは、いたるところで「シンプリシティ」を感じる。サン・セバスティアンという小さな町は人口比率で見ると、世界でいちばんミシュランの星が多い町らしい。しかしこの町でいただく料理はすべて、フレッシュでオーガニックなローカルフード。料理人の愛情がこもったもので、いわゆる高級料理ではない。

バスクを旅してさまざまな人の暮らしにふれながら、これから日本が目指すべき社会のヒントがここにあるように僕は感じた。すべての無駄を排除し、もう一度、「シンプリシティ」という視点に立ち、ひとりひとりが新たなライフスタイルを築いていかなければならないのだ。

Get SIMPLE!

As I sat in my hotel room in Basque country watching the disastrous events in Japan unfold – I, like the rest of the Papersky crew continually asked myself- ‘What should I do?’ and ‘How did this happen?’ These questions would linger with me during my entire trip in Basque. However, it was in this small, but beautiful and proud country that I would find hope for Japan. The answer I felt was a need for an inner change- a new way of thinking. A return to ‘Simplicity.’ A return to a lifestyle that was based on nature, culture and a respect for both oneself and others.

The humble pride of the Basque people amazed me the people we met were young, yet, had a strong sense of culture and camaraderie. We were fortunate to meet with two top athletes playing for two of the top sports teams in the world; one was Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Liorente and the other was cyclist, Samuel Sanchez from team Euskaltel-Euskadi. What was amazing was that both of these athletes were from the tiny country of Basque. In fact, the teams they performed for, both strong teams on the world stage, were made up of entirely Basque atheletes. How is this possible? By staying simple, knowing what’s important and having no excess.

Basque’s focus on ‘Simplicity’ as a lifestyle is found everywhere. The tiny city of San Sebastian has more Michelin stars per capita than any other city in the world, but the food is not fancy- just fresh, organic, local and prepared with love. Basque stands out in the arts as well. It’s traditional dances are said to be the birth place of ballet; while the city of Bilbao is using contemporary art to inspire it’s citizens.

It’s our hope that Basque will inspire Japan to once again live a life that is based not on excess, but rather, ‘Simplicity.’

でも、久々にニューヨークを訪れて、あきらかにこの街が変わったことを実感した。街行く人々の表情もどこか穏やかだし、街にもどことなく安心感がある。今回の取材では「写真」をテーマにニューヨークを歩いたが、写真がいま、この街をよりエキサイティングな場所にしているという事実も目のあたりにした。デジタル化が進み、写真というメディアのありかたも変化するなかで、ニューヨークでは写真に対する新たな種が播かれ、新たなメディア（アート）として生まれ変わっているようだった。

そんなニューヨークの写真再生期に、PAPERSKYは、この街で暮らした経験をもつ写真家の若木信吾さんと旅をした。いわゆる名所から、なんでもない街の風景まで、「写真」をテーマに、２週間もの間、歩き、話し、そして呼吸をしながら、まさに写真三昧の日々を送った。この街で暮らす写真家に取材をし、写真を扱う新旧のギャラリー、そしてMoMA にも訪れた。また、写真専門の出版社や写真専門学校などの取材もおこない、時間の許すかぎり、良質なアートブックを扱う個性的なブックショップにも足を運んだ。

ニューヨークで新たに播かれた「写真」の種は、確実に萌芽し、再生しはじめている。僕の個人的な意見だが、写真とは、クリエイティブな表現であるとともに、エネルギーが発する瞬間を捉えるものでもあり、それは鑑賞者の人生に深い感動と変化をもたらすメディアとして、より人々に影響を与える存在になるだろう。この旅でたくさんの写真にふれ、写真について考えながら、僕は写真が果すべき新たな使命のようなものを感じた。

A New York Photography walk

Seven years have passed since I last traveled to New York City. In the days when we were doing Tokion I would frequently travel to the city but always seemed to dread the place- the people were cold, certain areas were extremely dangerous, everybody seemed to think they were the center of the world, and all in all it was actually a pretty boring place.

Things have changed. This time I found the people were pleasant, the city was safe and our theme for the issue, photography, seemed to be an incredibly exciting and timely topic. We discovered and learned that this artform- which some have claimed is finished- is in fact actually just beginning; being remade and re-thought and re-inventing itself. And to our surprise, this metamorphosis is taking seed in New York City.

The Papersky crew decide to take a walk around New York with photographer Wakagi Shingo by our side- clicking and capturing some iconic New York landmarks along the way. We walked, talked and breathed photography for about two weeks. In that time, Papersky met up with some of the driving photographers young and old behind this metamorphosis.

We also visited some of the best photography galleries in the city. Of course we stopped by the MOMA, Aperture and The International Center for Photography as well as managed to take a peak into a few photography workshops. And of course, before returning to our home in Japan, stopped by some amazing bookshops.

To sum up our trip in brief, a re-birth of photography is firmly taking seed in New York City, and inmy humble opinion, the message simply declares: Photography is about creating and capturing goodenergy and in doing so, inspiring life.

インターラーケンで電車を降り、ドイツ語圏の田舎町を自転車で走り抜け、アルプスの山々を眺める。そしてまた電車に乗り、ヴヴェイ駅で下車すると、そこにはまったく違った言葉があり、文化がある。食べ物、建築、ここではすべてがフレンチスタイルだ。そしてまた電車に乗りこみ、今度はジロ・デ・イタリアを観戦しにポスキアーヴォへ。この町の陽気な雰囲気はまさにイタリア。レースを誘導する警官もイタリア人だ。ロマンシュ語圏の文化にふれようとツオーツの町にやってくると、この地方でしか見られない独特な幾何学模様の建物が立ち並ぶ古い街並が現れた…。

４つの公用語を持つスイスには、多様な文化が存在する。そしてこの国にはそれぞれの文化を尊重し、かつスイス人としての誇りをもつ人々が存在する。どの町を訪れても高く掲げられている国旗を見るたび僕は、人々の愛国心を感じると同時に、この国の人々が自分らしく生きることへの誇りを素直に表現している証のようにも感じられた。スイスが魅力的な場所である理由は、この国の人々が魅力的だからにほかならない。そう、僕は思った。

Swiss an Idyllic Ride.

Switzerland is what all countries should aspire to become. Besides being a bicycle loving and friendly place, the nation is stunningly beautiful, unpretentious and intelligent all while being able to keep a remarkable balance between localism and globalism.
Papersky spent two weeks riding bicycles as well as trains and literally traveled all around the country. In doing so we learned that Switzerland’s ultimate respect for individuality as well as community is the secret behind the good vibrations we felt throughout our journey.

We would get off the train at Interlaken and ride 40 kilometers through the Swiss Alps while passing through German speaking regions. Then we would get back on the train, ride, exit, pick up some rental bikes at Vevey station and “voila!” The area becomes French as does the language, the food, the customs and even the architecture. Once again: on the train, off the train, rent the bikes, this time at Poschiavo and “Mama Mia!” – it’s Italy, even the police leading the pelaton of the Giro de Italia are Italian. For the oldest ethnic group, the Romansh, we visited Zuoz a quintessentially quaint town, with its distinctive half-circle doors.

Although, while each region of Switzerland speaks a different language and carries its own distinct culture, everybody is proud as a button to be first and foremost Swiss. The Swiss flag flies high everywhere, in a manner that in most places would be embarrassing- but here it’s genuine- it’s not about being patriotic, rather it’s about being proud of just being who you are. This is what we found in Switzerland: a land of good people who are genuinely proud to be themselves.

これまでにさまざまな国を訪れ、さまざまな文化や人々との出会いがあったが、どこを訪れても僕は「自然が文化をつくる」ということを体感する。衣食住に関わることはもちろん、宗教や教育…すべての文化はその土地の自然に影響されたものだと思う。つまり、自然がすべてのはじまりで、そこから文化が生まれるのだ。だから『PAPERSKY』では、どの時代をどこで生きようと、自然に敬意を払った生きかたをしてほしいというメッセージをいつも伝えている。

今回、僕たちはヨセミテの自然に魅せられたアーティストたちの存在に注目した。多くのアーティスト
が作品を残したヨセミテのさまざまなポイントを訪れ、彼らが感じたインスピレーションを求めて旅をした。ヨセミテはことばでは表現できない自然の息吹で満ちている。だからこの特集を見た読者の方々には、実際にヨセミテ国立公園を訪れ、その雄大な自然にふれてほしいと思う。そして『PAPERSKY』が選んだトレイルを歩き、サイクリングを楽しみながら、アーティストたちが受けたインスピレーションを肌で感じてほしい。

We have consistently relied on nature as both a playground and school for higher learning. Papersky has traveled the world and everywhere we go- there is stunning nature-
some of the most amazing Nature is absolutely nothing, like the Sahara Desert. Meanwhile on the other side of the coin, there is Nature that is everything like Yosemite National Park in California this issues featured destination.

Papersky has always subscribed to the idea that Nature plays an indispensable role in forming culturesnature determines a region and people’s culinary culture, sleeping patterns and even what materials a culture uses to build their houses with. In short, nature is the very source, the fundamental point of inspiration for culture and that’s the message we set out to convey in this unique issue of Papersky. We selected six intriguing artists from various generations who work in different mediums and for each artist we chose a trail in Yosemite which we felt conveyed
the right mood or place of their artworks.

Our hope is that you will visit Yosemite yourself and hike, climb or bike the trails Papersky has chosen and when doing so, share the artists’ inspiration from the bountiful Nature that surrounds.

Media for a New World

Papersky is Refreshed! Welcome to The Fresh Issue. I mean Fresh as in- natural, enlightening, positive, clear, light, beautiful, organic and happy. Now that we have been around the world, we’re ready to change the way we look at the world by celebrating the idea originally proposed by the renowned engineer, philosopher and artist Buckminster Fuller.

The One – Town World

We’ve started using Fuller’s Dymaxion map on the cover as well as table of contents to express this shared vision. Fuller’s map is the only map that doesn’t cut any countries- it shows the world as one, it shows all the world’s oceans as one and does so on a scale more accurately then any other existing map. And if you cut the map and paste it together carefully you’ll get a miniature globe- amazing!
We live in an exciting time, where people are starting to realize that the world is one living organism and the people of the world are one family. Like any family, we have so much to learn from one another, and Papersky is committed to sharing the stories, knowledge and wonder under the sky of each and every place we travel to, whether in our backyard in Tokyo, Japan or halfway across the world. Each issue will bring you a unique and different way to travel.

「ナチュラル・リズム」とは、自然に対する願望というだけでなく、ハッピーな感覚を生みたいと感じるセンサーのようなもの。そしてそのセンサーがバリ島で暮らす人々にはしっかり備わっていると僕は感じた。バリ島滞在中、こんなことを聞いた。この島の人たちは、空間を3つの領域、すなわち神々、自然、人の世界に分類している、と。とてもシンプルに聞こえるが、神々と自然と人の世界、この3つの重要性をつねに認識しているからこそ、彼らは自分や家族、コミュニティのために、内的幸福と外的幸福を生みだすことができるのだろう。

バリ島の人々は幸福に満ちている。子どもたちはいつでも大きな声であいさつし、満面の笑みを浮かべてくれる。ガムラン音楽は聴いてすばらしいだけでなく、人々のからだ全体を落ち着かせ、安らかにする効果もある。食べ物は地元産の食材でヘルシーだし、スパイスは舌を刺激するばかりか、脳と身体の両方にメッセージを送る。こうしたことすべては、彼らが「ナチュラル・リズム」を守り、その感覚を大切にすることの重要性を意識しているからにほかならないと思う。

バリ島の人々を幸福にし、神々と自然と人という3つの世界を結びつけるもうひとつの要素、それは瞑想である。僕は子どものころからハイキングやウォーキングを楽しんでいるが、今回の旅で僕は不思議な体験をした。山を歩きながら、瞑想状態に入っていたのだ。自然と自分、そしてこの土地の神々と一体となった感覚…。そう、僕は「ナチュラル・ハイ」になっていたのだ。

今回、初めてバリ島を訪れた僕から、読者のみなさんに一言。頭の中で「ナチュラル・リズム」が鳴りだしたら、とにかくバリへ行け！

PAPERSKY #30 BALI | Natural Rhythm

Happy from Bali

It’s really interesting that over seventy-percent of the people that I meet in cities, pretty much wherever I travel, would rather live in a rural area then in the city. It seems that there is a calling inside many of us to return to nature. And I think this calling comes from an innate mechanism which I would like to call a Natural Rhythm.

Natural Rhythm for me is a conscious approach to creating happiness. During our stay in Bali I was told that the Balinese divide spaces into three specific areas: Nature, people and the spiritual world. It sounds quite simple, but I think by constantly acknowledging the importance of these three things: nature, people and the spiritual world the Balinese people are able to create an inner and outer happiness both for themselves, and their communities.

The people in Bali, radiate in happiness. The kids are always greeting you with big hellos and horseshoe smiles. The Gamelan music, is not just nice to listen to, but has a soothing and peaceful effect on your entire body. The food is healthy and the spices besides lighting up your taste buds, send a message of wholeness to your brain and body alike. And I think the reason for all of this is because the Balinese are very conscious of the importance of keeping and preserving a Natural Rhythm.

Another element, that helps the Balinese people stay happy and tie-together the worlds of nature, people and spirits is a frequent dose of meditation. I’ve been an avid hiker for twenty years, but this trip to Bali marked the first time that I combined hiking and meditating. You literally get naturally high.

Anyway if you’ve got a Natural Rhythm humming in your brain, my advice would be to tune it up and go to Bali.

旅のはじまりは、オーストラリア大陸の中央に位置するウルル（エアーズロック）、そして、ウルルから450kmほど離れた町、アリススプリングス。僕らがこの地域を取材先に選んだのは、アボリジニの聖地であるウルルをはじめ、ここには太古から変わらぬ姿で鎮座する巨石群が点在し、アボリジニとともに暮らしてきた動植物や彼らの祖先が残した壁画が数多く存在する場所だからだ。そしてこうした自然や彼らの創造物によって形づくられたソングラインも、ここにははっきり存在している。

ソングラインとは、アボリジニの祖先が放浪した道筋を、神話や古代文化の概念などを織り交ぜながら、歌や踊り、絵画をとおして語り継いできたアボリジニの遺産のこと。聖なる大地は生きものであり、その大地は歌によって生かされていると彼らは言う。彼らの祖先もまた、歌うことで生命を吹きこみ、歌を通じて命を与えられていたのだ。そして彼らは歌うことのなかに自分たちの先祖の土地・物語・夢を大切に保存し、それを自分たちの過去、現在、未来の時間の流れのなかで再現している。

今号の旅のナビゲーターは、10年ほど前に、オーストラリア北部のアボリジニ居住区、アーネムランドでアボリジニの人々と暮らした体験をもつGOMAさん。この土地の文化と、ディジュリドゥと呼ばれるアボリジニの楽器に魅了されたアーティストだ。「ソングラインを奏でながら」というタイトルのとおり、僕たちの旅はGOMAさんの吹くディジュリドゥとともにあり、同行したクルーの手にはいつも高音でリズムを刻むリズムスティックがあった。そう、僕らは、オーストラリアのソングラインに新たな音を刻みながら旅をしていたのだ。

今号を通じて読者のみなさんがオーストラリアに伝わる文化に親しむにつれ、その歴史のリズムにかき立てられ、いずれ、自分自身のソングラインを奏でてくれるだろうことを願って。

This issue of Paper Sky is very special as it is the first attempt for a major Japanese magazine to report on Aboriginal Australians or Indigenous Australian culture. Native Australians date back as long as 125,000 years ago and consisted of over 300 languages, so as you can imagine the best we can do is scratch the surface.
We began our trip in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park- the belly button of Australia and then moved to Alice Springs. One of the reasons we know that these two areas are so special is due to the large number of paintings, natural rocks, water holes, trees, animals and land formations. These natural elements forrm or become what are known as Songlines.

Songlines, also called Dreaming tracks by Indigenous Australians, are in short how Aborigines past their culture from one generation to the next. Songlines pass down ancient cultural concepts and stories through singing, storytelling, dance and painting. Songlines are an intricate series of song cycles that identify landmarks for navigation. For the Aborigines all land is sacred and alive. Their ancestors gave life in singing, gave them life through song. The songs must be continually sung to keep the land “alive”. In singing they preserve the land/story/dreaming of their ancestors, and recreate it in their oneness of past, present and future.

Our guest for this issue is Goma, who ten years ago, was living in Northern Australia’s- Arnhem Land. Goma was fascinated by the culture and the Aboriginal instrument called a didgeridoo. We called this issue Playing the Songlines, because as we traveled to the various sacred sties and met Native Australians, Goma would always have his didgeridoo in hand, while the females of our tour would be carrying Rhythm Sticks. In short the Paper Sky crew was traveling Australians’ Songlines in stereo. It’s our hope that as you read about this ancient culture you’ll be stirred to the rhythms of their history and set off to play out your on songline in Australia.

まず僕らはニュージーランドの最高峰マウント・クックを目指して車を走らせた。途中、ニュージーランドでもっとも星空が美しいといわれるテカポ湖でサンセットを迎え、暗闇を静かに照らす南半球の星々に出会った。星空を眺めていると、どこか遠い惑星にトリップでもしたかのような、そんな気分。しばし星空観察を楽しんだ後、目的地であるマウント・クックへと向かう。マウント・クックは、エドモンド・ヒラリー卿が人類初のエべレスト登頂に成功する前にトレーニングをしていた場所で、春だというのに、氷河に覆われた山々の表情は険しかった。

その後、僕らは北島に移動し、ニュージーランドの首都ウエリントンへ。ここでは、ギャラリーをめぐったり、カフェに立ち寄ったりと、街を散策して歩いた。それから今度は小さなプロペラ機に乗って、この国でもっともマオリ人口が多い町、ロトルアに向かった。ロトルアでは、マオリのガイドと一緒にフィリナキの森をハイキングし、彼らの食糧と薬の大切な源となるさまざまな植物について教えてもらった。その道中、僕たちはとっておきのスポットを発見した。そこはケロシンクリークと呼ばれる場所で、温泉が湧きでる川。温かい温泉は旅の疲れを癒し、僕らの身体と心をほぐしてくれた。

そして僕らはこの旅のハイライトのひとつ、ワイポウアの森を目指した。ここには４頭分の象の体より太く、天空を突きぬかんばかりの巨木、カウリがある。そう、ここはマオリの聖地のひとつでもあるのだ。樹齢2,000 ～ 3,000年と呼ばれるカウリの木々は、圧倒されるほどにみごとで、カリフォルニアのジャイアントセコイアや屋久島の縄文杉と並んで、まさに必見の価値あり。

さあ、ハイキングシューズのひもを結び、バックパックのストラップを締めたら、キーウィのようにニュージーランド中を歩きまわろう。歩いた分だけ、きっと新たな発見があるから。

Walk like a KIWI !

this issue the Paper Sky crew along with Ishikawa Naoki spent approximately two weeks trekking, hiking, walking, running and strolling about New Zealand. Our first stop was the South island.

We ventured down to Mt. Cook, the spot Sir Edmund Hillary trained before becoming the first human to successfully climb Mt. Everest. On our way to the mountain our eyes ventured skywards towards the heavens in the small town of Tekapo as we did some star glazing at the unique New Zealand sky. From the stars we returned to heaven on earth as we smelled our way about the beautiful Garden City, Christ Church.

We traveled North and soon found ourselves on the North Island where our first stop was at Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. We did quite well in Wellington, strolling about galleries and cafes. Once rested we flew on a small propeller plane up to Rotorua a town with one of the largest Maori populations in the country. In Rotorua we enjoyed hiking in the Whilinaki Forest with a Maori guide, who pointed out to us many plants that were a valuable source of food and medicine to the Maori people. A nice secret we uncovered on the trail was that several of the rivers in the area such as Kerosene Creek are in fact hot springs- perfect for bathing, resting or relaxing.

One of the highlights of this trip was definitely Waipoua another location sacred to the the native Maori people for it’s giant Kauri Trees- that are fatter then four elephants stuffed together and higher then the altitude at which many birds fly. The trees, dating back 2,000 to 3,000 years ago were truly amazing and along with California’s Giant Sequoia’s, and Yakushima’s Jyomonsugi’s are a definitely must see forest sensation.

So string up your hiking boots, and strap on your backpack and get ready to walk like a Kiwi- all over New Zealand.
