The Yamanobe Road is Japan’s oldest recorded road as it’s mentioned in the book Nihon Shoki. The road is lined with ancient burial mounds and some of Japan’s most historically significant temples.
We are now taking sign ups at [email protected] for Papersky’s Tour de Nippon Nara. The event will take place on 5/28 (Saturday) and 5/29 (Sunday). Papersky’s Tour de Nippon project is about finding the magic of Japan’s rural districts, their inhabitants, nature, culture and food. Each ride travels to various prefectures to ride bicycles, eat local food and meet the ‘real’ people of the areas. This upcoming ride will take us to Nara and we’ll be hiking and biking around the area called Tenri City as well as around Sakurai City. The areas distinguished as being home to Japan’s first road, the Yamanobe trail.
Participants will have an opportunity to picnic as they walk on the ancient road as well as to explore some of Japan’s oldest and most precious historical temples and burial mounds many belonging to past emperors. Highlights will include views of Mt. Miwa, a visit to the Isonokami Jingu and plenty of fruit and vegetable stalls to select your perfect fruit of choice.
