境界のない音楽｜個性きらめく国、アイスランド（No.27）

アイスランドに初めて訪れた僕は、空港から首都レイキャヴィクへと向かうバスの中で、すぐさまいくつかのことに気づいた。まず、その風景が地球上のどこにもないような風景であるということ。氷河、火山岩、間欠泉、ときに温かく、ときに冷たいスカイブルーの海水、溶岩の上を覆うベルベットのような緑の苔、そしてどこまでも続く空……。気がつけば、いつの間にかそんな景色に囲まれている自分がいる。美しいものには、自然と体が反応する。澄んだ空気の中で思いっきり深呼吸したり、大地から立ちのぼる水分を肌で感じたり、美しい景色のなかを自由に流れる川や新鮮な水を大量に注ぎ込む滝の音に心地よく耳を傾けてみたり……。
すばらしい景色や自然の音――アイスランドの次世代の若者たちが、彼らの祖先と同じく、これらを無垢のまま保持しつづけてくれるとよいのだが――のほかに、この国には音楽という音がある。音楽といえば、世界で最も美しいサウンド（と僕は思う）を生みだす、ビョークやシガー・ロスといったミュージシャンにもいえることだが、アイスランド音楽には境界というものがない。あらゆる音楽ジャンルとカテゴリの垣根を越え、どんどん拡大し、創造しつづけ、さらにその音楽を聴いた人々の脳内でも創造が広がっていくのだ。
そして音楽と同様、アイスランドの人々もまたボーダーレスのように見える。僕たちは、地元の高校生と一緒にライブを楽しむ世界的に有名なバンドのメンバーとも話をしたし、クラシック音楽出身なのに美しいポップミュージックを生み出し、たったひとつのフレーズで人々にエネルギーを与え、そして人々を楽しませるような音楽を作曲するミュージシャンにも出会った。
Paper Sky のアイスランドへの旅は、本当に神秘的な体験だった。毎号、僕たちが願って止まないことだけれど、そこに住む素敵な人々、その価値観や感じ方、またそれぞれの場所がもつエネルギーが、皆さんのハートを心地よい雰囲気で満たしますように。

Iceland Twinkles and Tinkles Total Uniqueness
If you are a first time traveler to Iceland there are a few things you will notice right away on your bus ride from the airport to the small, but capital, city of Reykjavik.
To begin, the landscape is like nowhere else on earth. You will find yourself surrounded by glaciers, volcanic rocks, geysers, sky blue colored water- sometimes hot sometimes not; sea waves crashing up against velvet green mossand a sky that goes on forever. Of course, as with all beautiful things, your body will react; happily breathing in massive doses of clean air, ticklingly absorbing the moisture from the land; and pleasantly listening to waterfalls pouring buckets of fresh water into rivers that run freely through the landscape.
But besides the fabulous site and sound of nature, which hopefully the next generation of Icelandic youth will be able to keep as pristine as their pagan ancestors, there is music. Music, which in the case of both world-renowned Bjork and Sigur Ros offers arguably some of the loveliest sounds in the world. Icelandic music is borderless, it spreads across all music genres and categories and continuous to spread and create until it’s found an ear to enter and a mind to expand. And as with the music, the people of Iceland also seem borderless, we talked to musicians that were in world famous bands playing with high school kids; classical trained musicians popping out beautiful pop music and combinations of music that would energize, sooth and groove all in a single phrase.
Paper Sky’s trip to Iceland was a magical experience and it is our hope as it is with each issue of the magazine that the amazing people, ideas, feelings and energy of the place will soak your heart with good vibrations.
