BIG & BLUE in AUSTRALIA
For this issue we went for a drive, an ocean drive, to the land down under, AUSTRALIA. We were in search of the sea and how the sea shapes the Australian’s lifestyle. We took the coastal highway from Brisbane down to Melbourne and between the strong blue skies and the bondi blue sea we were totally surrounded by blue- Big & Blue in Australia is probably the best way to capture the mood of our road trip. While we passed by old towns, new towns, big towns and small towns we discovered the country through our car windows, gas stations, and of course all the people and places we met along the coastal route. Following is a brief list of some of our Australia de mitsuketa totte oki no himitsu.
Red Rock Deli Chips especially Lime & Black Pepper flavor, Mount Franklin Australian water, friendly Fishermen with all the time in the world that let you pull in their 5kg Salmons, Amazing Stars at Night- including a full on view of the Milky Way, the overwhelming number of beautiful beaches, the fact that coffee lattes are so creamy and sweet, the countless varieties of Yukatalipitus Trees, bar girls with sexy tattos above their hips, flower shops with flowers you’ve never seen in your life, Nat Young, Bob Mctavish, Chyan Horne, the fact that on coming cars blink their lights to let you know you will be coming up on a patrol car, New Catsle, the ridiculus scene of thousands of white joggers in the city of Sydny, the amazing number of Greeks and Greek food, government sponsored bush parties or raves, truckers in neon shirts, Pelicans that sit on the lampposts as if they were piggons in any other country, the following restrants all with an ocean view: Rae’s, Bather’s Pavilion, Stokehouse, The Baths and A La Grecque, birds that speak languages you’ve never heard of before, freeways that are like go-cart racing courses, morning trance in 8 out of 10 cafes before 11:00 am, girl’s schools with uniforms more colorful then most of the Australian bird population, the fact that 80% of the newspaper is devoted to sports, the unity between kids and kangaroos on the soccer field, shark nets, Mick Pearce one of the world’s most amazing architecst and his new project the CH-2 Green Building (www.melbourne.vic.gov.au), the 40 minitue ferry ride across Port Phillip Bay, the fact that everyone seems to always be sticking their thumbs up in place of the word OK, the road signs especially the Kangarro and Wombat signs, cricket games on TV, Australian men who despite it being winter are mentally unwilling to wear warm clothes and walk around in shorts and short sleeve shirts, the fact that the Australians call Burger King- Hungry Jacks, and the heavenly large number of lawn bowling establishments.
So you ask how after only one trip we were unable to unlock so many of Australia’s best kept secrets- well we took to the ROAD! Specifically we took to the Ocean Road- driving down the coast from Brisbane to Melbourne and covering over 2,200 kilometers and stopping at all the small towns in between in search of three things: 1) to find unique Paper Sky-ish places to stop, 2) to meet a few of Australia’s legendary surfers, 3) and to feast at the best ocean view restaurants. So get to Australia, rev your engines and buckle up for the most spectacular coastl drive in the world.
